How many porta potties does my job site need?

A Pennsylvania job site needs at least 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. With more than 20 workers, OSHA requires 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. We recommend 1 standard unit per 10 workers with weekly service so units stay usable all week.

Source: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c), Table D-1. Standard units include a seat and a urinal. Our recommendation assumes a 40-hour week.
Workers on siteOSHA minimum (29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1)Our recommendation, weekly service
1–101 toilet1 standard unit
11–201 toilet2 standard units
21–401 toilet seat + 1 urinal3–4 standard units
41–802 seats + 2 urinals5–8 standard units
81–1203 seats + 3 urinals9–12 standard units

That table is the legal minimum. It is not legal advice, so confirm with your safety officer or general contractor. Run your own numbers in the job site toilet calculator. OSHA also requires handwashing on construction sites under 1926.51(f); a hand wash station covers that.

How does 28-day billing work for a construction porta potty?

A construction porta potty from Leonard Rental Works is billed in 28-day cycles, not calendar months. Each cycle includes 4 weekly service visits. The first cycle carries the delivery and pickup charge, so renewal cycles cost less. Billing stops on the day you call or text for pickup, even in the middle of a cycle.

Most Chambersburg builders keep 1 or 2 units through framing and rough-in, then add a unit when finish trades arrive. Adding a unit to a site we already service goes on the next route.

What happens on a weekly service visit?

A weekly service visit on a job site porta potty takes about 10 to 15 minutes. The technician pumps the waste tank, scrubs the seat, urinal and walls, refills the blue deodorizer, restocks toilet paper and hand sanitizer, and checks the door, vent and lock. Units are serviced on the same weekday each week.

Crews larger than our 1-per-10 guideline can add a second weekly visit. Tell us gate codes and site hours so the truck is never locked out.

Where should a porta potty go on a construction site?

A construction porta potty should sit on firm, level ground within about 15 feet of a spot our service truck can reach, away from crane swing paths, trenches and material drops. In Franklin County winters, keep the path plowed; units get antifreeze brine from December through March so tanks do not freeze.

On tight borough lots, a driveway apron or the back of the lot off an alley works. Units can be staked or strapped on windy ridge sites near South Mountain.

Construction porta potty questions

Do you rent porta potties for small residential builds with 2 or 3 workers?

A single standard unit with weekly service covers a crew of up to 10, so a 2- or 3-person crew needs just one. Many home builders in Guilford and Greene townships rent one unit per lot.

Can you move the porta potty to a new spot on the same site?

Call or text and we move it on the next service visit at no charge when the new spot is on the same site. Please do not drag or tip the unit yourself.

Do you supply towable porta potties for road or pipeline crews?

Towable trailer-mounted units can be hitched and moved by your crew each day. They suit road, utility and fence crews. See towable units for moving crews.

Can I get a lock on a job site porta potty?

Units can be fitted with a lock hasp so your crew can add a padlock after hours. Give the code or a key to us if the unit will be locked on service day.

Can I set up a business account for several job sites?

Contractors with more than one site can keep one account with one invoice per site. Ask when you call and we set it up.
